South East Dallas Humane Society Adoption Policies
Our Rescues are placed into family situations only within Texas, preferably the Dallas/Ft. Worth Area. We do not place dogs for the purpose of guarding or fighting.
Minimum requirements for adopting from SEDHS are:
All applicants must be at least 21 years of age Previous large breed ownership experience preferred Participation in formal obedience training and socialization often required Demonstrated responsible dog ownership and primary care giver of a dog (INCLUDING Spay/Neuter of current family pets) Demonstrated financial stability If you rent, we require a letter from your landlord giving you permission to keep a dog on the premises and there are no insurance problems.
If you do not meet these minimum requirements, please wait until your circumstances change before applying to adopt.
**Please note that some insurance companies may cancel your home owner's insurance if you own an American Bulldog, Pit bull, Rottweiler or Doberman. It is the responsibility of the adopter to check with their agent prior to adopting one of these breeds to make sure doing so will not adversely affect their policy. SEDHS is under NO obligation to adopt an animal to any individual.
Unless otherwise noted, an adoption donation of $145 is expected when you adopt your Rescued dog. All dogs are temperament tested by our volunteers/foster homes and their health and temperament monitored prior to placement. We keep each rescue a minimum of 7-14 days in order to properly assess each individual dog, to get to know them in order to find the right match for their new family. We do not place aggressive dogs or dogs with a bite history. And we strive to only place known healthy dogs. All animals are spayed or neutered prior to placement, are current on vaccinations, and tested for heartworm and are on preventative. An adoption contract is required when the animal is placed. An addendum is also required for our "Power Breeds" (IE... Pit Bull, Rottweiler, etc..)
Animals in foster care and adopted out by SEDHS are not warranted for health or behavior/temperament and not released until the dog's health permits. This includes spay or neuter surgery. Dog licenses are the responsibility of the adopting family.
All family members are required to meet the animals prior to adoption. We do not ship at all and we do not deliver dogs on an "unseen" basis. This helps to ensure the best possible match of dog and family.
We prefer that our dogs go to homes with securely fenced yards. Whether you live in the city or in the country, no dog can be safely left to run "free" without your direct supervision and control. The price of such "freedom" is inevitably injury or death: from automobiles, from Animal Control, wild animals such as coyotes or from justifiably irate neighbors. Like Wolves, domesticated dogs have an inherited instinct to catch prey. The unfenced country dog will sooner or later discover the neighbor's livestock and could cause harm to such. Many state laws allow a livestock owner to kill any dog chasing or "worrying" his stock, or "running" deer on his property. And livestock owners are quick to act on this right. The unfenced city dog may exercise his catching instinct on joggers, bicyclists, other animals and automobiles. An unfenced dog is always destined for disaster. If your yard is not fenced, we will require the dog to be on lead at all times.
Puppies not yet house trained will only be adopted to homes where they can be let out every two-four hours and have someone with them most of the time.
SEDHS is under NO obligation to adopt an animal to any individual.
Please be advised that we are all volunteers. We all have full-time jobs, families, and animals of our own. Many of us work more hours doing rescue work than we do at our full-time jobs. While we make every effort to process applications and return phone calls immediately, this may not always happen. Please, be patient with us. Emergency medical calls and calls about the safety of our animals take priority. Application processing time averages 3 days to 1 week depending on the volume of applications received and the presence of puppies in our foster care.

ATTENTION DOG FIGHTERS
This web site doesn't condone the disgusting and cruel practices of fighting, "rolling" or "game testing" dogs. If you enjoy watching two dogs tear each other apart, click on the link below and get some help!
